Lacoste

Tennis legend Rene Lacoste was born in France on 2nd July 1904. The actual history behind the –Alligator- starts back in 1927. Rene Lacoste always enjoyed narrating how his nickname evolved into a symbol known all over planet.

He turned into a tennis star when he and his teammates "The Musketeers," took the Davis Cup from the Americans for the first time in tennis history the year 1927. Lacoste was dubbed "the Alligator" by the American press media, following a wager he made with the chief of the French Davis Cup Team for a travel case manufactured with alligator skin. The captain stated to purchase the travel suitcase for Lacoste if he won a very significant match. The public showed affection of this nickname which presented the persistent determination he exhibited on the tennis courts with his opponents, "never letting go of his prey!"

Rene Lacoste's good friend, Robert George, sketched a crocodile that Lacoste subsequently had stitched on a vest which he used on the tennis play field.

An observant viewer at Rene Lacoste's Davis Cup games was the champion of the British Women's golf title, Mademoiselle Simone Thion de la Chaume, who before long became Rene’s wife and steady support.

In 1933, Rene Lacoste and Andre Gillier, the holder and leader of the biggest French knitwear production company of those times, established a company to produce the custom logo - stitched shirt. The winner had created this for his personal use on the tennis grounds, along with a number of additional shirts for tennis, golf and sailing. The shirt transformed men’s sportswear and changed out the custom weaved fabric, long-sleeved, starched traditional shirts.

To the best of our understanding, this was the first time that a trade name symbol showed up on the outside of an article of clothes - a concept that has since come to be incredibly successful.

The corporation is based in Paris, France and creates apparel, shoes, fragrances, leather goods, eyewear and wrist watches. The first Lacoste shirt was white, a little bit shorter than its competitors, had a ribbed collar, short sleeves with ribbed bands and was produced from a gentle weaved material known as 'Jersey petit pique'. These days, it keeps providing the same level of quality, ease and comfort and firmness that developed its name and which supports its individuality. Rene Lacoste passed away on 12th of October in 1996. At the peak of his tennis career, he was one of the best tennis players in the world holding numerous champions; he had three French Opens wins in 1925, 1927 and 1929, two Wimbledon champions in 1925 and 1928 and two U.S. Open titles at Forest Hills, New York in 1926 and 1927.
