Versace Designer History:
Born in Reggio Calabria, Italy, on December 2, 1946, Gianni Versace started his learning and training skills when helping at his mother's dressmaking business before he started working as a self-employed fashion designer. When he was 25, Versace was already making pret-a-porter selections for leading fashion houses of the time, such as Genny, Complice and Callaghan.

With the support of his brother, Santo, he set up the Gianni Versace Company In 1978. Soon after in the same year, the earliest Gianni Versace range for women was revealed in Milan.

Gianni's daring, inspiring and exceptionally creative talent constantly pushed the limits of the fashion world. His unique shapes, lively designs and unusual fabrics superbly unified great art and fashionable lifestyle that swiftly gained him worldwide recognition. In 1982 Gianni received the Cutty Sark and Golden Eye (L'Occhio d'Oro) prizes for his 1982-1983 Fall/Winter collection for women - wherein he introduced his popular metallic chain-mail dress. Versace was awarded the Golden Eye again in years 1984, 1990, and 1991.

Furthermore in 1982, Versace started work for Teatro della Scala, creating clothing for Veronesi's making of "Josephslegende". Gianni's involvement with the theater ignited a fire that would certainly follow his career. He was a passionate supporter for the performing and visual arts and also an important participant of the international artistic community. Versace's magnificent outfits were presented in stage happenings globally, most notable Donizetti's "Don Pasquale" in 1984, Bob Wilson's "Salome" in 1987, and "Doktor Faust" in 1989, and also with a number of Bejart ballets, such as "Dionysos" (1984), "Leda and the Swan" (1987), "Malraux ou la Metamorphose des Dieux" (1986) and "Chaka Zulu" (1989). In 1985 Versace was accorded the "Maschera d'Argento" - Silver Mask Award - for his contribution to the world of theater.

The jury of the Cutty Sark Awards titled Versace as "the most innovative and creative designer in the world" in 1988. The Council of Fashion Designers of America honored the American Fashion Oscar to Versace in 1993 and he was also awarded by the Italian and French presidents.

1994 designated the starting of the Versace flagship boutique in the prestigious Kurfurstendamm, Berlin while later that same year in September, the "Versace Signatures" event launched at the Kunstgewerbe museum.

Additionally in 1994, Versace published his book "Designs" the English edition of his book, "Vanitas - Ricami e Decori - Decori e Ricami." Working together with publisher Leonardo Arte, photographers Richard Avedon, Bruce Weber and others, Versace released three more highly-praised volumes: -Men Without Ties- (1994), -Do Not Disturb- (1995) and -Rock and Royalty- (1996).

The first Versus fashion display was organized in New York in 1995. That year, Versace financially backed the Haute Couture event at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, along with Richard Avedon's "1944-1994,"that equally found amazing success.

He combined the spheres of fashion and entertainment while his luxurious shows were pop-culture occasions. He received his ideas from modern-day street lifestyle, and movies together with art and design history. Despite the fact he had been fighting ear cancer, it was a serial killer Andrew Cunanan who ended Gianni's life on July 15, 1997. Cunanan shot Versace right in the entrance of his house in Miami Beach, Florida. Just four days sooner, Gianni had agreed upon an offer to take his company public, as holder of 45% of The Gianni Versace Company. His percentage of shares was inherited by his then 11-year old niece, Allegra.
