Jicky Limited Edition 2019 perfume for Women by Guerlain

Jicky was composed in 1889 by Aime Guerlain , and is considered amongst the first fragrances in modern perfumery. It breaks the tradition of the times when naturalist and soliflor fragrances were favored. Jicky is a daring combination of natural and synthetic like coumarin and vanillin. The coumarin and its delicious smell of almond, isolated in 1868 by the chemist Perkin, was used in perfumery since 1882 and paved the way for an iconic olfactory family: the Fougeres. Vanillin, on the other hand, recomposes the smell of vanilla. It's a powerful and sweet note that has contributed to Guerlain's story. Aime Guerlain, with Jicky feminizes and revisits the family of Fougeres. Its very name incorporates this notion of masculine-feminine. Indeed, Jicky is the diminutive of Jacques Guerlain, the nephew of Aime but also the nickname of an English girl whose Aime had fallen madly in love. Many famous personalities, including men and women, have been fans of this fragrance such Jackie Kennedy, Joan Collins, Sean Connery and Karl Lagerfeld.

For its 130th birthday, Jicky is re-enchanted around an amazing and unknown connection with Africa. In Senegal , Sheikh Ahmadou Bamba (1853-1927) is a personality very honored even these days. Poet, Sufi theologian and especially great lover of Jicky, he peacefully opposed the colonization of his country. Each year, on the anniversary of his exile in Gabon, his disciples come to collect himself on his tomb and bring bottles of perfume Jicky.

Painted entirely by hand, the bottle takes on vibrant colours and unique textures, faithful to the tradition of free and profuse African art. The use of coffee grounds – the artist’s favourite material – offers the crystal bottle a singular relief, a raw dimension that contrasts with the symbolism of its motifs. Guerlain chose the Senegalese-born artist Baye Gallo to commemorate this astonishing African facet through an exceptional edition painted and carved from his hand. On giant crystal bottles, Baye Gallo travels Jicky to this remote land of Senegal. It mixes human silhouettes in black and geometric patterns in primary colors. Three traits are omnipresent and symbolize life: the past, the present and the future. Each bottle is unique and signed.
