Brooklyn comes to life in spring. Striking yellow magnolia pops from sidewalks, flowering weeds, graffiti near cherry trees in little parks with black iron gates.

Spring is a religion in New York. We wait for each budding flower first snowdrops, crocus, then tulip and daffodil. The trees gather momentum and the hairy magnolia buds burst in moist fragrance.

Everyone is familiar with the white ones, but Brooklyn has its own variety hybridized by the Brooklyn Botanical garden (one of my favorite places in the city) in 1953. It is royal and smells solidly of many things, sugar magnolia, dessert, lemon, powder, rot. They bloom through the sidewalk all over Bedstuy and Fort Greene.
