Jean Paul Gaultier Designer History:
Jean Paul Gaultier was born in Arcueil, Val-de-Marne, France on April 24 1952. While hardly ever experiencing proper training as a designer but alternatively began posting his sketches and drawings to renowned fashion stylists from youthful age. In 1970 designer Pierre Cardin was amazed by his creative skill and talent and employed him as an associate. Right after a short period at Jean Patou under Michel Gomez and a short come back to Cardin, he established his private brand in 1976, turning down his education preferring his style that lured more from the London street world than Parisian couture.

In 1976 Gaultier introduced his first range and he was instantly recognized as a status in fashion in the manner of a contemptuous character, whose behavior and ideas shocked, embarrassed and annoyed the French fashion industry. Much of Gaultier's ideas for pret-a-porter shows are taken from city streets and pop lifestyle while his Haute Couture ranges are very elegant, yet lively.

While practically amazing, Gaultier has consistently taken great pleasure in humorously imitating and exaggerating the fashion establishment. In fact, he is acknowledged with re-interpreting several fashion exhibitions. In the 1980’s, he re-designed underwear as outerwear, with a series of creations which ended in the corset outfit and black studded bra made globally popular by Madonna in her Blonde Ambition tour of 1990. A decade later the bra was sold for £14,000 at auction. In 1988 he also tried to take apart the overused unoriginal masculine styling, making a skirt for men.

Apart from his men's and women’s wear ranges and the haute couture collection he launched with excellent critiques in January 1997, Gaultier has released JPG, a more youthful and recreation style series for both genders, and a range of signature fragrances, starring in some of the promotions campaigns himself. In July 1999, Hermes invested $15-million in his company as part of a deal which Gaultier described as "a dream marriage". In return, he granted the company 35% of all forthcoming royalties, plus "preferential rights" over several of his new creations. As a designer and an entertainer, Gaultier is strain-less-ly gifted. In 1989, he launched a music record, Aow Tou Dou Zat - "How To Do That" in cooperation with Tony Mansfield, however thankfully he did not quit the day job. He has also created the outfits for many films such as Peter Greenaway's The Cook, The Thief, his Wife and her Lover in 1989, Pedro Almodovar's Kika in 1994 and Luc Besson's The Fifth Element 1997. In 2001 he received the opportunity to play himself in the French movie edition of the TV series Absolutely Fabulous-Absolument Fabuleux, next to Jennifer Saunders and Catherine Deneuve.

In that same year, Gaultier was given one of France's highest accolades, he was awarded the title of Chevalier in the Bastille Day honors list.

Jean Paul Gaultier Fragrance History:
His first scent, Classique, was introduced in 1993, followed by Le Male for men two years later. Both releases have numerous seasonal releases to this very day. They were equally extremely successful and profitable business wise, and paved the way to succeeding fragrances such as the floral perfume Fragile, the unisex "Fragrance for humanity" Gaultier² - spelled out Gaultier to the power of two, and the refreshing but masculine Fleur du Male.
